Ex-Sheriff Goodell Dies – 1903

In October, 1903, Roswell Eaton Goodell, who served La Salle county as Sheriff, his term beginning in 1850, died in Denver, Col., where he resided.  He was a son of Roswell Goodell, and was born in Pomfret, Conn., in 1827, and came to Ottawa in 1834, settling with his parents near Buffalo Rock.

A sister of Roswell Eaton Goodell married Alson Woodruff, who was Sheriff from 1836 to 1838, and during his term Roswell Eaton Goodell was a Deputy Sheriff, and in 1850, Goodell was elected Sheriff, and later clerk of the Senate.  While there he met the daughter of Governor Matteson, whom he married, and later moved to Joliet, and then to Chicago, where he became prominent in banking affairs.  He was also treasurer of the Chicago and Alton road, but lost his fortune in the Chicago fire.
